READ THE DATA CAREFULLY

Reported incidents are only one part of the picture.

01

Choose a time period. One short interval may be unrepresentative.

02

Compare like with like. Offence categories, population, businesses and visitor activity affect comparisons.

03

Avoid address-level claims. An area count cannot predict whether a particular property is safe.

A REPEATABLE METHOD

Compare periods without guessing

1 / SET THE SAME BOUNDARY

Use the same suburb or local government area for both periods. A QPS police district is not the same boundary as Toowoomba Regional Council.

2 / SET THE SAME OFFENCES

Compare one offence category at a time, such as unlawful entry or vehicle theft. Do not combine unlike categories.

3 / USE COMPARABLE PERIODS

Compare full 12-month periods where possible. Note changes in reporting or offence definitions.

4 / STATE THE LIMIT

Reported or detected offences do not include every incident. Counts can be influenced by population, businesses and visitors.

The QPS online crime map displays offence types for the past five years. For historical LGA rates by offence type, use the Queensland open-data dataset. Check its latest update before quoting a trend.

In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000). For non-urgent matters, use the reporting channels listed by Queensland Police. This site is not an emergency service.
